Jimmy Delano Watson, age 91, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026, following a long illness. He was born on November 29, 1934, in Indian Ridge, West Virginia, to the late Lynn Spencer Watson and Helen Watson.
Jim proudly served his country as a United States Air Force veteran spending part of his service in Paris, France, where he worked as an aircraft mechanic.
Affectionately known as “Jimbo” by all who knew and loved him, Jim was a man of many talents and an endless curiosity for how things worked. At just 17 years old, he began working alongside his father as an electrician at a coal mining tipple, where his lifelong mechanical skills first took root. Those talents grew into a remarkable ability to restore and create—most notably bringing a 1954 Corvette back to show-quality condition and completing the full restoration of a Piper J-4A airplane, which he proudly flew to Myrtle Beach many times for family vacations.
Jim’s love for life showed in many ways—from entertaining his grandchildren with his rhythmic leg-slapping and singing the “Hambone” song, to riding his beloved Harley motorcycle. His joy, humor, and creativity left lasting memories for all who shared time with him.
Well known throughout King, North Carolina, and the surrounding counties, Jim earned the reputation as “the farmer’s best friend.” If it had a motor, turned a gear, or needed paint, Jim could fix it. His knowledge, generosity, and willingness to help others made him a trusted friend to many.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 32 years, Phyllis Wyatt Watson, whose loving care and dedication sustained him throughout his illness. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Shirley and Wanda; his brother Dicky; and his son, Jimmy D. Watson.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Phyllis; his children,
Michael Watson, Jason Sechrist (wife Ruth), and Adam Sechrist (wife Lindsay); his grandchildren, Megan Masencup (husband Justin), Casey Southern, John Firth, Christina Mabe, Christopher Watson, and Chad Watson; and his great-grandchildren, Wesley, Cooper, Ty, Lane, Faith, Caleb, Killian, Gracie, and Kierstin. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Ford, and her husband Bill, whose support has meant so much to the family during this difficult time.
For the past ten years, Jim spent many peaceful days sitting on his porch in Crumpler, West Virginia, accompanied by his beloved pets, Missy, Little Bit, and Lily, reminiscing about his childhood and early years growing up just down the road.
No formal services are planned at this time. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
