John “Wayne” Davis passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on April 10, 2023. He was born in Winston-Salem on February 28, 1948 to John and Vennie Davis. Wayne graduated from North Forsyth High School in 1966 and earned his bachelor’s degree in English from Elon University. On May 24, 1969, he married his wife, Evangeline. Their love and dedication expanded over 53 years. They were blessed with two daughters, Kelli and Kara. He was a devoted father who could always be found watching cheerleading, swim meets, and endless hours of dance recitals. Even after the girls grew into adulthood, he was always the one they called for advice or to find out what that funny noise was in their car. Wayne enjoyed many pleasures in life. Most Friday’s he could be found perfecting his golf game at Pine Tree Golf Course. If there wasn’t a golf club in his hand, it would be holding a fishing pole. He looked forward to trips to the coast with his father for fishing off the pier or the surf. After retirement he could be found in many mountain streams fly fishing. Before those trips, he would spend hours tying his own fishing flies. Wayne’s biggest joy in life came 20 years ago with the birth of his first grandson, Trey. Connor and Davis soon followed, and his life was complete. The pure bliss that would light his face was a sight to see. Affectionately known as Grandy, he could be found cheering the loudest at all their swim meets, football, baseball, and basketball games. Grandy proudly wore a Cary baseball cap given to him by his grandsons. The boys have many precious memories with their Grandy, but the Christmas holiday season will always be special to them. Every year Grandy would put on his full Santa suit for every party and family gathering. Grandy loved passing out candy canes to all the party goers. He would even show up to all the parties hosted by his daughters to brighten the spirts of all there. Wayne was preceded in death by his father John Davis, his mother Vennie Davis, and grand dogs, Baloo, Ralphie and Roxy. Wayne’s memory lives on and is survived by his wife, Evangeline; daughters, Kelli (Chad) Harris of Cary, NC and Kara Davis of Huntersville, NC; grandsons, Trey Harris, Connor Harris and Davis Harris of Cary, NC; sister, Betsy (Hunt) Chapman of Haymarket, VA; and dear friend and cousin, Bobby West of Mocksville, NC. A memorial service will be held at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church in Kernersville on Friday, April 14, 2023, at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 ( www.TrellisSupport.org ) or to Sedge Garden UMC at 794 Sedge Garden Rd., Kernersville, NC 27284 ( www.sedgegardenumc.org ).
