Marian Garvey

Marian Garvey passed away at age 94 on September 12, 2022 surrounded by the love of her family. Marian was born in 1928. In 1955, she married Walter Garvey, who preceded her in death. Marian is survived by her five children, Ellen Garvey (Gerry Kane), Ruth Garvey-Nix (Larry Nix), Anne Garvey, Janet Garvey, and Paul Garvey, as well as seven grandchildren, Caitlin and Ruth Moffatt, Eric (Anya Iskandarian), Kate and Tyler Weiss, and Jordan Wood (Eric) and Renee Garvey. Marian was predeceased by her brothers, Donald and Richard, and sister, Janet. Marian received her bachelor’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University and master’s degree in Dietetics and Nutrition Science from Penn State University. She taught food science at Carnegie Mellon and spent her early career in the food service industry; after her children were grown, she worked as a dietitian. Marian was a member of Beulah Presbyterian Church and sang in the Mendelssohn Choir. After retirement, Walter and Marian moved to Florida where they enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, playing tennis, and were active members of the First United Methodist Church and its BYKOTA (be ye kind one to another) class. Marian moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 2017 to be near family and live at Salemtowne. She loved the natural beauty of North Carolina and especially enjoyed watching the birds. The family is deeply grateful for the compassionate care and support that Marian received from staff at Salemtowne and Trellis Supportive Care Marian’s love of family, gardening, music, the outdoors, cooking, reading, and learning kept her busy. She brightened the lives of all she touched and will be deeply missed. A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
